New UK Safety And Security Declarations For EU Imports

As of the 31st of January 2025, all goods imported into Great Britan from the European Union (EU) must be accompanied by a safety and security declaration.

Background

Following the UK’s departure from the EU in 2020, typically referred to as BREXIT, the UK government has gradually introduced new border controls. The latest stage involves implementing safety and security declarations for shipments coming from the European Union.

These declarations, also known as entry summary declarations (ENS), are already required for shipments coming from countries outside the EU into GB.

Responsibility

To importers, this means additional information must be provided about their goods to UK customs, including:

  • Indication if the goods are hazardous and if yes, UN number
  • Sender name, address, postal code, city, country, EORI
  • Receiver name, address, postal code, city, country, EORI
  • HS code 6 digits

Although the legal responsibility for submitting safety and security declarations rests with the carrier of the goods, such as the airline, the importer must clearly indicate the required information on their commercial documents to ensure a smooth transaction.
